Synopsis

Album Description
1001 Nights in the Harem was commissioned by the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra - a violin concerto written for Patricia Kopatchinskaja, with whom Fazýl Say formed a duo in 2006. The title recalls the famous collection of fairytales The Thousand and One Nights, and just as Scheherazade is the tireless narrator in that work, so the solo violinist in Fazýl Say's concerto takes on the role of `principal storyteller'.

"Kopatchinskaja / Say: Beethoven Ravel Bartok Say

The 1001 Nights in the Harem of Fazil Say and Patricia Kopatchinskaja is my second CD acquisition of the two. I knew Fazil Say as I have all his CDs, but it was a delightful discovery of the two together in a Duo. They have a similar flamboyant style and one can hear this in their music. I highly recommend this CD, but also the one that came out just before and the reference of which figures above. The 1001 Nights in the Harem composed by Say for Patricia brings us reminiscences of a long-lost time with great virtuozo accomplishments by Patricia. Summertime Variations and especially the Alla Turco jazz reflects the originality of Say's improvisations as always. Great CD....
