Herreweghe finds the glow at the heart of this music, and lets it radiate quietly. There is no 'performance' here, no self-consciousness, no tension, nothing flashy. There is a simple gentleness and an inward-looking fervency. The choir has moments of breathtaking beauty - try the sopranos' entrance in the Agnus Dei : 'lux'. This is a recording to keep close to your heart."
