CD Reviews

De Andre':a great Italian singer and poet!

(5 out of 5 stars)

"This CD contains many of the most famous songs of the very talented Italian "Cantautore"(singer-composer)Fabrizio De Andre'.This CD was graved during a concert that De Andre' made in the 90's so many songs are a little different from the studio version.Songs like "Marinella" "Bocca di Rosa" "Il pescatore" and many others are really some of the most popular in Italy.De Andre' was (unfortunately he died in 1999) a great poet with a first rate ability to select the right word in the right place. The music is exquisitely blended with the words .The author was deeply sympathetic with French music and American composers like Bob Dylan and Coehn(he translated in Italian many songs of the latter). He also wrote many songs in various Italian dialects (he came from Genua in the north but for example wrote "Don Raffae'"in my humble opinion the best song in the Napolitean dialect of the last years). The author favourite way of working was to dedicate every CD to a theme so for example one of his best CD is "Non all'amore, non al denaro ne' al cielo" which is an arrangement of Edgar Lee Master Spoon River lyrics.Fabrizio De Andre' shows in every song a deep human sympathy for the many victims and leftovers of contemporary and ancient history, his heroes are drugged people ,political prisoners, prostitutes,American natives,Gypsies, mad people etc.etc.A particular interest is reserved for the relation between man and death the greatest contemporary taboo. But he doesn't give any easy receipt to follow:he knows there aren't any, what is left to us is sharing our emotions.I immensely love De Andre' which i am sure in the future will be recognized as one of the greatest Italian poets of the late 1900!"

"He died some time ago and in this album you can really appreciate his sophisticated way of doing songs. The best is Fiume Sand creek, beautiful "Country" ballade. Then there are other, such as "Bocca di Rosa" that really made him famous and that are milestones in Italy's music history. This album really includes all his biggest and most famous successess. All the songs are written, sang and played by him. All fantastic songs. Rhytmated and with fantastic words. This is "high music". Is not pop, is not classic music...this is the music of De Andre'."
