CD Reviews

Powerful Performance
R. Rosen | Petaluma, CA USA | 12/22/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This CD clearly captures Eydie Gorme's vocal brillance. Eydie is known as a singer's singer, and her performances, here, are a pure joy to hear. From the lovely I Got Lost in His Arms (Barbra are you listening?) to the jazzy You're Getting to be a Habit with Me (eat your heart out Diana Krall), Gorme's considerable vocal power, incredible sense of timing and lyric interpretation cannot be denied. In addition, the sound quality and the fine arrangements of Don Costa makes this CD a must for anyone who enjoys classic standards sung as they were written to be sung."
NOT A LIVE PERFORMANCE, BUT A GREAT ONE!

"I shyed away from this fine import at first, not being a huge fan of "live" albums. Upon further investigation, I found out the "misleading" title was in fact just that. Eydie WAS on stage when this was recorded, but there was no audience, only the great musicians led by that wonderful arranger/conductor, Don Costa. And wonderful cannot describe the emotion put into each of these vocals here; I have most of Eydie's imports like this (LP style case, original liner notes, Japanese OBI strip, etc) but this one is my favorite. My fellow reviewers hit it right on the head; "I GOT LOST IN HIS ARMS" is by far the best version of this Irving Berlin standard anywhere. A nice tempo that has Eydie and Don and the band swinging, and that perfect phrasing that Eydie exudes everytime she steps up to a microphone. "ALRIGHT, OKAY, YOU WIN", a 'hit' for Peggy Lee, becomes a GRAND SLAM in Eydie's wake; brassy, flirtatious, and sizzling; you get the feeling she could hit four more octaves even when she hits her highest notes here, and she hits quite a few, and that great tag on the ending blows the competition away. There are references in Eydie's reading of Cole Porter's "JUST ONE OF THOSE THINGS" to other Porter songs ("Too Darn Hot" is one) that put the arrangement over the top. Eydie and Don continued to record together (as well as hubby Steve Lawrence) until Costa's untimely death some years ago. The musical world is a better place because of that union, and this "ON STAGE" performance serves as testimony to that.

Gorme -- One of her BEST!
F. Barton | Newport, WA USA | 12/13/1999

"This limited edition import, is one of Eydie Gorme's single best albums. Recorded at the Las Vegas Convention Center, sans an audience, it represents Gorme, with tremendous arrangements by Don Costa, who also produced. Tracks like "Get Out of Town", and "Alright, Okay You Win" are true standouts. Other songs include, "Taking a Chance on Love", "I Got Lost in His Arms", Better Luck Next Time", "But Not for Me" and others. The remaster is great, and lots of true stereo separation, just like on the album. This special issue comes in the form of a CD-sized LP cover, identical in every way to the original cover! The cost may sting, but you will treasure this release forever."
