CD Reviews

One of the smartest Riot Grrrl albums
Z. Liu | Chicago | 08/04/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Shall we say the ur-Sleater-Kinney? Sure Becca's voice isn't as haunting as Corin's, and CJ's drumming isn't as virtuoso as Janet's, but you hear the heart and soul of SK--smart beyond the heads of the britney spears/spice girls crowds (how is he says he feels your pain/he felt mine too), and the killer guitar from Carrie Brownstien. Even though it's not quite Sleater-Kinney, it still gets a 5 star rating for Decatur HS, and Drop Dead Look. Drop Dead Look at only 1:46, is riot grrrl punk distilled into an espresso shot, so good, I wrote a lengthy short story by its inspiration. And if you listen to this album in the dark, you'll see blood and pain dripping from the album cover, it's that powerful."
Excuse 17 - best indie rock around
Kevin L. Graham | United States | 03/28/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Excuse 17's second album "such friends are dangerous" really shines. The recording quality is brilliant for an indie label. Becca's vocals cut down to the bone. Allowing the listener to feel the lyrics rather than jusr hear them. Songs like "watchmaker" really rock, while songs like "nervousness never fades" are very emotional and have a great melody. I enjoyed hearing a female band with strong opinions address something other than just men or feminism. I would recommend this cd to anyone who likes "Sleater Kinney". I think Excuse 17 are far better, that just my opinion though. I really like Becca's voice. They broke up so get it while you can."
