Synopsis

Album Description
"A set of timeless beauty, spanning almost half a century, from a great lady of American vernacular music..." - LIVING BLUES "A handful of field recordings of Etta Baker's music, released in the 1960s, were enough to influence many aspiring traditional guitarists, from Bob Dylan to Taj Mahal." - NPR.ORG "The 'premier woman Piedmont blues guitar instrumentalist' is a wordy but accurate description of 87-year-old Etta Baker. One of the last pickers who was around when the music was first being recorded, Baker's years of practice are manifested in these wonderful recordings...this is music you never get tired of listening to. Newcomers to guitar should buy this album, both to marvel at the intricate technique and to amuse themselves with how frustratingly difficult it can be." - ALL MUSIC GUIDE "Etta and Cora show us how music used to be played a long time ago. A deep source for inspiration." - TAJ MAHAL Etta Baker is the premier Piedmont blues guitarist. This incredible set was recorded in the 1980s at the height of her instrumental prowess! Features rare recordings of Baker dueting with her elder sister Cora Phillips. Etta Baker is a National Folk Heritage Award Winner and was featured on NPR's Morning Edition in March 2005. She was born in 1913 and has been playing guitar since the age of three. She plays the guitar everyday, and is constantly working on new arrangements.

CD Reviews

Another brilliant piece of work by Etta and her sister

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Etta Baker's fingerpick style will really blow you away. She was also fantastic at the almost lost art of chawhammer banjo. If you love acoustic music, get this and anything else Etta Baker has done."
