"Here is a 4-CD Set that costs less than most 2-CD Sets; and this one has 100 songs; all original. You cannot go wrong with this one. A fine booklet is also included which provides info regarding discography. All of ET's big hits are here, as well as some lesser known numbers. There's duets with the legendary Red Foley, and you can hear the incredible lead guitar which made his music so recognizable, despite the ever-changing lineup of guitarists on display here. Proper Records released this set, and they deserve a big thumbs-up on this one."

"Wow - a compendium of the best of Ernest Tubb from 1941-1950 at a bargain price. Sound quality is excellent (given the age of the masters) and the music is quintessential Texas Troubador, including the original versions of most of his biggest hits. Proper has put out a set which restores the early Tubb catalog in a manner befitting the efforts of Bear Family but at about 1/3 of the price of an equivalent Bear collection. Ernest was in his vocal prime with these recordings, and (although his bands here were not as good as later collections of Texas Troubadors -particularly the mid-60s batch), The Texas Troubadors augment ET's efforts in an appropriate manner. Those who saw ET in his later years will note that the arrangements of some of his 40s hits changed over time, particularly that of his signature tune "Walking The Floor Over You" , which sounds relatively acoustic here compared to the rather jazzy number it became in the hands of later, more amplified, versions of the Texas Troubadours"

Poor sound quality

"I was introduced to Ernst Tubb via another cd: A Loretta Lynn box set where he did a couple of duets with her. I was impressed by his powerful, booming voice on the cd and decided to check this out.



Needless to say I was disappointed with this cd.



Now I know it is cheap, BUT, it reminds me of the old adage: "You get what you pay for."



I wish I had listened to the reviewer here who complained about the poor sound quality. The sound quality of this cd is atrocious. You have to turn your radio up so loud to even hear it and even then, the percussion here is non existent. Did he even have a drummer??? You wouldn't know by listening to this collection.



Also, his voice sounds nothing like he did with the Lynn duets or from some of the other cds that you can sample here.



As for the music, a lot of the riffs seem to be very repetitive also. At times you find yourself saying "Didn't I hear this song before?"



It does have some good points to it though. Some of the duets that he does with Red Foley are good and many of the songs you think to yourself "If the sound quality was better this would be quite good."
