CD Reviews

One of Morricone's very best
Clark Gable | Miami, FL | 12/11/2004

"I couldn't agree more with you, Christopher. Unfortunately, during the late 90's all the way to 2004, Morricone has not been properly appreciated which is a shame, because he is undoubtedly one of the best film composers of all-time.

Morricone always were at his best when creating slow, melodic, emotional scores (though he can compose bombastic Wagnerian orchestra compositions a la Williams as well). This is a perfect example of the melodic Morricone, where one can witness the Italian maestro in one his greatest moments. Bugsy's score is indeed like many other Morricone scores (it especially resembles "The Untouchables" score, which was magnificent in its own right); Yet it is different in so many ways.

The score is mixed with a few Jazz songs (Johnny Mercer appears in several tracks) to truly add to that 30's-40's era the film achieves so well.

As with most of Morricone's scores, the emotions one evokes from listening to this score are beyond words and expressions.

After listening to past efforts from Morricone (especially his western collaborations with Leone in the 60's), one can wonder how he can top his earlier achievements; yet Morricone admirably rises to the challenge yet again and proves that for the past 40+ years he has established himself as one of the most prominent, successful and original film composers of all-time. Indeed, he is right up there with the best of them (Williams, Steiner, Herrmann, Bernstein, Goldsmith, etc.) and can sometimes even surpass them with great style.

Morricone is certainly not young in years, but one thing is for certain: Morricone will continue to surprise and innovate in film music till the day he dies.

This score is thoroughly recommended not only for Morricone fans, but to all film scores enthusiasts in general."
Beautiful. Timeless. Morricone.
