After first appearing on the spunk singles club as lola flash with her song 'psycho', emma russack has forged ahead on her own writing organic dramatic pop songs under her own name and self-releasing them through mail order. Spunk has had our eyes on her for the most part of 2009, watching emma develop into a solid songwriter. Driven by her deep, haunting voice, emma russack makes simple melodic music that projects a wisdom, grace and maturity that far surpasses her 22 years. Weaving lyrics concerning everyday life together to create surreal, fragmented emotional narratives, emma then layers these over simple melodic guitar and piano motifs to create something unique and inspired. Emma russack sounds like no other young pop star, and while vocals are often the driving element of her work, she has also proved to be a talented multi-instrumentalist. Her endless and intimate hiss-drenched lo-fi home recordings of 2008 and 2009 are testament to this, distorted guitars, strange drum loops, pleasingly out of time piano, and lonely handclaps laced together to build her entirely selfdriven and awkwardly beautiful project.
