CD Reviews

I wondered if that was gonna shake anybody up.

"This is the soundtrack to a 1963 Elvis movie. It is a very short album, clocking in at 21 minutes. Fortunately, this CD version adds several bonus tracks to bring the album up to over an hour in length. The music itself is rather hit and miss. The single from the album was "One Broken Heart For Sale", which was the first Elvis single since he signed with RCA Records to fail to make the Top Ten (it peaked at #11). There are a couple of very nice ballads written by Don Robertson ("They Remind Me Too Much of You" and "I'm Falling in Love Tonight"). "Beyond the Bend" is a pretty good up tempo number. "Cotton Candy Land" and "How Would You Like to Be" are the worst songs on the album; both of them are pretty absurd. The bonus tracks on the CD are alternate takes of nine of the ten songs from the original album. "A World of Our Own" was completed on the first take, so there are no alternate takes of that song. The alternate takes are interesting to serious Elvis fans; it's fun to hear Elvis goof around after he makes a mistake. Sound quality is good throughout the CD, with the exception of the last track. "Take Me to the Fair" was originally recorded on August 30, 1962. That version of the song was rejected, and it was rerecorded on September 22. The master tape of the August version of "Take Me to the Fair" was lost, so it was recorded onto the CD from an acetate (which is a test pressing record). The acetate is rather scratchy and thin sounding, not to memtion in mono, but it's better than nothing. I noticed that Amazon doesn't have the bonus tracks listed, so here they are:

11. One Broken Heart For Sale - Takes 2,3,1

12. They Remind Me Too Much of You - Take 1

13. I'm Falling in Love Tonight - Takes 1-4

14. Beyond the Bend - Takes 1,2

15. Cotton Candy Land - Takes 1,2,4

16. How Would You Like to Be - Take 2

17. They Remind Me Too Much of You - Take 4

18. Beyond the Bend - Take 3

19. Take Me to the Fair - Takes 4-7

20. I'm Falling in Love Tonight - Take 6

21. They Remind Me Too Much of You - Takes 6,7

22. Relax - Takes 5,6,7

23. Happy Ending - Takes 4,5,6

24. Take Me to the Fair - August Master from acetate

"The CD soundtrack is just as goos as the DVD movie!"

""Of all of Elvis Presley's movie soundtrack albums from the 1960's none have been so intiguing to me as has this one for "IT HAPPENED AT THE WORLD'S FAIR", from 1963. Unlike most others from this decade, this one is very good. The songs compliment the action on the screen every single time. By far, the very best song in this lot is the longer film version of "One Broken Heart For Sale", which should have been issued on the originally released album and the single. Now, with this CD, you can finally have them both, along with the other 9 songs featured in the film. Coiincidentally; this was only one of a few 60s soundtrack albums by Elvis NOT to feature any non-movie bonus songs. The others were "G.I. Blues', "Blue Hawaii", "Girls! Girls! Girls!", and "Frankie And Johnny". Nonetheless, this album makes a great companion to the movie, which has just been released on DVD for the very first time. By all means, you will not be disappointed with them.""
