Get Inside This German Space Rock Master Group
Chris Gerbig | Ontario, Canada | 09/04/2000
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Eloy were one of the most internationally famous German progressive groups of the 70's and 80's. This CD compiles the best songs from their early albums "Inside", "Floating" and "The Power And The Passion". Though lacking the sophistication and polish of their mid to late 70's symphonic works, this CD offers an interesting blend of tripped out space rock meets heavy prog. It's full of hard edged guitar, multi-percussion, and cosmic organ and moog work. One of the most striking things is that Frank Bornemann's vocals (despite the German accent) sometimes sound like Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull. The songs are a combination of progressive and psychedelic styles that owe a lot to the early work of Pink Floyd. The best tracks are "Future City", "Inside" and "Madhouse". "The Power and the Passion" was a concept albums, so the excerpts from this are taken out of context and tend to be overlong and tedious in spots. Fans of early Pink Floyd or Camel might find this most engaging. It's an inexpensive way to explore this group's early recordings."
