CD Reviews

A classic in it's own right.

"The lyrics on Cold Vein were thorough, but on Oxrtumentals the beats prove that they have of life their own. This cd is street mixed with fantasy like a cyborg pidgeon. This is a good cd to listen to while drawing or doing any kind of creative work.
Oxtrumentals is definently a collectors piece."
Even without the lyrics... a dope album

"El-P is, without a doubt, the best producer out there today. Sure, some may make cases for Primo and Alchemist, maybe Madlib, but if you are looking for some beats that are not only unbelievable to listen to with lyrics on them, but also as simply instrumental masterpieces, then buy this album. The only downside of an lp like this is that it is very rarely ever as good as the actual album, which, by the way is already a hip-hop classic. If your not an underground head, or not an aspiring emcee trying to find dope beats to rhyme over, then I would tell you to buy the Cold Vein, or at least listen to it. Another downside is that there is no new material on it, just the same beats that appeared on the Can-ox lp. I would definately recommend this if you wanna be a producer and learn how to make truly original beats. If you like these beats, then get the Aesop ep "Daylight" which has "nickel plated pockets" on it and Def(initive) Jux Presents Vol I and II with bangin beats by el-producto: "paper mache", "sneak preview", and "stepfather factory" are my favorites. BTW, be sure to cop his el's new album "Fantastic Damage" out may 15.peace"

"El-P has got this "hardcore/sci-fi" thing down to a fine art. The Cold Vein minus the lyrics (i.e. "Oxtrumentals") is definitely a 5-star album. Being a campus DJ, I often find myself talking over these beats, freestylin' over these beats and even just enjoying them on their own. For the most part, El-p doesn't just create one bar and loop it 128 times per song. Each track goes beyond average hip hop convention. If you put "Shaft" and "Star Wars" together into one movie, "Oxtrumentals" would be the O.S.T."
