CD Reviews

Simply Wonderful

"A great CD that's worth buying. The music is a delightful blend of jazz, rock, and hip-hop, that makes for easy and relaxing listening. With good lyrics, strong bass, jazzy horns, and a little poetry, if you haven't heard people talking about El Jefe yet, you will soon."
A new bread of alternative hip hop.

"These guys created the perfect combination of dub, rock, and hip-hop. I've been searching for a band like this for a long time and finally I found them. Most bands that try to fuse hip hop with other genres just sound like they're trying a little too hard, but El Jefe puts out their own brand of it. I love it!"

"This band is not new; they've been around since 1999. Their latest release, Amorphous Phormula, is a great follow-up to their first self-titled release. The CD begins with the tripped-out "Intro (3 Years On The Boat)." The song uses samples, sounds and beats, which create a pleasant feel. "Elements" features smooth flows (compliments of the Wizard) and fluent beats. The guitar and bass really help develop the track into a sure-fire college radio hit. "1/2 Self, _ Expression" is very reminiscent of the Rhetoric song "Gold," yet maintains its own integrity. "Nightmare On Ceasar Chavez Road - The Club" features spoken word over a beautiful mixture of melodies and noise.
The song's spoken word uses all kinds of poetic devices including alliteration, internal rhyming and strait assonance; this proves that the band has talent. "Reflected Deception (Return Of The Brain Monkey)" crosses a bit of dub beats with some R&B. To put a cap on it-El Jefe offers an alternative to watered-down crossover music. If you enjoy hip-hop, jazz, R&B and dub-you are bound to love this Santa Barbara band's latest release."
