CD Reviews

Outstanding
Ghost of Eldon | Sunset Strip In The Sky | 10/20/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"A reissue of the infamous "Red Album", Live at the Whisky-A-Go-Go and the Cathay de Grande... PLUS the hard-to-find classic "Havin' Sickie's Baby" as well as an interview / chat with the late, great EL DUCE on the early history of the MENTORS.

An excellent introduction to anyone interested in this unique group!"
Good CD but has very low production values.

"I like this disc. I really do since it encapsulates the spontaneity of a few decent Mentors shows. In fact it's better than the abbreviated "mini concert" of what constitutes the release of The Mentors' "Side One" of "Sex Drugs & Rock 'n' Roll".

Unfortunately, it suffers from very bad tape hiss. The CD layout is just as bad where tracks start and end, cutting off some of El Duce's stage raps between songs. I spent a couple of hours fixing those errors. In the end my remaster of the album is better sounding and structured better than the original (I'll eventually express mail Mystic Records the end result, just for the sake of providing a fan-remastered and re-EQed recording).

And as energetic the live shows on this disc are, the final track of El Duce talking about the origins of The Mentors is as wooden as Al Gore running for the Presidency and makes George W. Bush seem intelligent and unstaged by comparison. Picture El Duce fighting the urge to slur while under the influence of way too much booze while at the same time trying desparately in keeping his eyes focused as he reads the script before him. I don't know if he was reading from a script for certain but that's the impression I'm left with. There is a fact or two to be found in this track if you can get past that.

Oh well. It's still a good disc and I recommend it to any Mentors fan. Audiophiles, beware of the bare bones production and the anticlimatic finale of a really slow El Duce on the final track."
