"ASV Living Era series is the finest single-disc jazz series and the Edmond Hall issue, Profundly Blue, is no exception. The disc begins with three fine tracks from Edmond Hall & his Celeste Quartet with Meade Lux-Lewis, an acoustic Charlie Christian and the great Israel Crosby on bass. This is followed by cuts with Billie Holiday, Lionel Hampton, Red Allen, Zutty Singleton, Coleman Hawkins and no less than five ensembles led by Hall featuring James P. Johnson, Emmett Berry, Vic Dickenson, Teddy Wilson, Carl Kress, Benny Morton, Harry Carney and others. The sound throughout is impeccable."
