CD Reviews

Fine Jazz
G. Greene | 09/18/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"After reading an interesting review of Higgins and listening to a few cuts on Amazon.com, I bought this album as a gift to liven up my parent's CD collection. When it came with several other CDs I'd ordered, I inadvertantly opened it, then listened to it, and immediately decided to keep it for myself. This man really knows his way around a jazz piano! There isn't a bad cut on the CD, and Greensleeves, a particular favorite of mine, is one of the best interpretations I've ever heard. Higgins starts this out with the expected haunting refrain, then about two-thirds of the way through jazzes it up, and then changes pace again for the close. His playing is wonderfully nuanced, and his phrasing is excellent. If you love hearing fine jazz, you will enjoy this album!"
Not Just Jazz!
Dino E. Argentini | PORTSMOUTH, NH United States | 07/06/2002
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This mans technic and improvisational artistry alone places him amongst the greatest jazz artists of our time. There is much more to him however beginning with his compositions, 'LELA' in the present work and his superlative arrangements in the 'WEST SIDE STORY MEDLEY' as well as the 'DUKE ELLINGTON MEDLEY' and 'PORGY AND BESS MEDLEY' also found in this volume . The breadth and depth of his musical knowledge serve to make each piece uniquely and beautifully original. Listen to his reverential approach to Bach's 'AIR FOR G STRING'. His musical acumen is brought to us time and again in this album."
Just a Beautiful Player
Bill Bradshaw | San Diego, CA USA | 10/03/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"No one would call Eddie Higgins an innovator, he's just a beautiful piano player. If you want gorgeous melodies played impeccably, this is your guy.

This album features little known tunes auch as "Lela" with great standards like "How Long Has This Been going On". His Porgy and Bess medly is a reminder of how many really classic songs are in Gershwin's fabulous musical.
