You Can't Lick These Rare Stamps!
R. Mix | Milwaukee, Wisconsin | 05/11/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"How deep did the talent run at Stax Records during the late-sixties? Consider Eddie Floyd. Despite being both the writer and performer of several significant hits at Stax, he was regarded by the label as a second-string artist.

And in early-1969, 'Rare Stamps' was just one of a staggering 27 releases issued en masse by Stax in a desperate attempt to call some big-time attention to the label after its sale to the (then) corporate monolith known as Gulf & Western.

Considered a minor release then, today it rates as one of the greatest soul albums ever made. Released again, it would likely be nominated for a Grammy, and Floyd would be chatting away with David Letterman and Conan O' Brien, or making the rounds of those early-morning network talk shows.

Its 1968 mate--'I've Never Found A Girl'--isn't too bad, either. There's easily a dozen tracks on this CD that would make an excellent foundation for any deep soul/blues mix tape you care to imagine.

"Girl I Love You", "I've Never Found a Girl", "Water", "Love Is a Doggone Good Thing", "On A Saturday Night", "Things Get Better", "Big Bird", "Got To Make a Comeback", "I've Just Been Feeling Bad", "Consider Me", and his take on Sam Cooke's "Bring It on Home to Me" and Jerry Butler's "Never Give You Up" all ooze the chugging country and blues-tinged soul that made Stax famous.

It's a miracle this CD is still in print, so if you're wise-enough to have looked this up, please be wise-enough to click that yellow 'Add to Shopping Cart' button.

You won't regret it.

"This cd, which only seems to be available in the US is a great selection from Eddie Floyd. The mastering is great. Top quality but still reminds you of the old singles and album tracks."
