CD Reviews

The best of all the singing cowboys!
06/14/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This recording takes me back to bygone days, when life was simple, and morality was "in." Eddie Dean had the clearest, truest voice of all the singing cowboys, and is sadly missed! Let's have more of his recordings!"
Superior cowboy singer, good sides

"I first heard of Eddie Dean courtesy of a very cheap 7" extended-play record, date unknown, containing various artists, including Dean performing his very own "I dreamed of a Hillbilly Heaven" (under the abbreviated title "Hillbilly Heaven"). I loved the tune and the singer, and later I ran across this CD, a late-fifties collection of nice songs, nice singing, and nice musicianship, all under-rehearsed and acoustically cramped, though well-remastered, at least. I suspect that the original sessions (c. 1958 and 1960 on the label) were rush jobs, but talent on the part of all concerned makes this a superior listening experience in spite of the cheap productions. "Hillbilly Heaven" is not included, but there are two Dean-penned tunes--the classic "One has my name (the other has my heart)" and the highly entertaining "Boogie woogie cowboy." Dean was one of the most popular singing-cowboy stars of the 1940s, and, on this CD, we get a good idea why."
