Synopsis

Album Description
Ed Johnson's second solo release offers a sophisticated, high-energy blend of contemporary jazz, laced with pop, R&B, Brazilian and other South American and Afro-Cuban elements. Johnson's original compositions feature distinctive melodies and stunning musicianship, fully realized with soulful lyrics and skillful harmonies. In addition to masterful steel and nylon string guitars and vocals, Johnson demonstrates concsiderable skill as an arranger, as evidenced by the sparkling blend of other instruments and vocals. The album features some of the best musicians in the business, including Brazilian pianist Jovino Santos Neto and Santana bassist Benny Reitveld.

Melodic Jazz Fills My Soul
02/26/2002
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I don't just love the songs, I love the whole CD. "Over that Wave" has no filler. Each song flows from one to the other, creating a complete listening experience. The musicianship is outstanding, but the CD doesn't stray into "musicianship for the sake of musicianship." The rich vocal harmonies and horn arrangements have a specific purpose in each song. It's very melodic and listenable. Two of the songs are in Spanish and have an almost "folkloric" quality to them, which I think is extraordinary in a jazz CD. Some of the other tunes have a real R&B beat to them which will get you dancing around the kitchen; others have a genuine soulfulness that never strays into the superficial. Five stars."
Excellent. My favourite kind of music.

"Stongly influenced by brasilian bossa nova (which I obviously love, brasilians have the best musicians/composers in the whole world), this Ed Johnson's CD has become one of my favourites lately. I'd never heard of him until a while ago. Thank God I did. He's fantastic, excellent composer and guitarist with good mellow voice, his melodies are superb, instrumentation is very well chosen, exquisite arrangements, voices are very well fit. This is definitely my favourite kind of music: somewhere between jazz, soul, latin, pop, bossa nova and world music. I love this because Ed Johnson sort of mingles all these styles into a great album. Thank you Mr Johnson. We're waiting for the next one."

"As a student of Ed Johnson's guitar class, I can truly say that this is a great album, and he's a great teacher."
