Synopsis

Album Description
Jeanette Wrate and the Northern Lights Ensemble blend the melodies and rhythms of Finnish folk music with the improvisation and swing of contemporary jazz, to create a unique and original music. This innovative group led by jazz drummer Jeanette Wrate, grew out of a personal exploration of her Finnish and Norwegian roots. Finnish folk music which has many influences from Celtic to Eastern European music, provides a fertile ground for musical expression and interpretation. A consummate jazz drummer, Jeanette has performed with artists like Dizzy Gillespie, Jimmy Witherspoon and Maiden Voyage. Ms. Wrate's ability to translate Finnish folk music into her native musical language, modern jazz, is the integration of two rich musical traditions. The Northern Lights Ensemble includes Jeff Gauthier on violin, Craig Ochikubo on keyboard, and Anders Swanson on bass.

CD Reviews

A very nice set of folk-inspired jazz from a drummer to note
06/20/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I had hardly heard of drummer Jeanette Wrate before I listened to this CD, but I'll certainly be watching out for her work in the future. This music was inspired by Wrate's discovery of Scandinavian folk music, but is clearly the work of jazz musicians. All four band members make impressive contributions, especially Wrate herself, a fine drummer who also composed or arranged all the music here. A few tracks are slow and atmospheric, but there's not much somber, most of it has a sunny feel. This CD has a generous 70 minutes of very good music, and is beautifully packaged as well. Worth checking out!"
