CD Reviews

Most challenging piece of art ever made

"EbonyLake, hailing from the UK, released this album which caused a shockwave in the underground scene back in 99'. The septet which represents EbonyLake plays extreme avant-garde metal with a lot of twists and turns going on. Ranging from fast black metal-parts, through doom-parts, to disharmonic classical music and even jazz music, the album is a heck of a listen. You won't actually "get" this album before at least ten listens or even more. Personally I can't seem to get tired of it.

Highly recommended for any fan of avant-garde metal in its most extreme form."
Beyond death metal... into something... else

"Quite honestly, this CD is NOT for everyone. In fact, it's not even for all death metal-heads or goth/psyche metal (you know, all these genre lines). This is some seriously twisted music. Its theme is set in a mythological time, and almost a medieval time; however, it's done SO believably well. The music, itself, is layered, disparate, brilliant, dark, beautiful, and quite ugly all at once. It's not brutal (aka Cannibal Corpse or Lamb of God) per se but it IS heavy. It's very complex and requires the ears' every attention.

Beware: each song is a very long story, and the lyrics reflect this quite literally. Most of the members of the group participate vocally, and it gets quite... disorientating, but in a way I can, at least, appreciate with great depth.

For something so extreme and different even a metal-head might crook an eye-brow at the prospect of obtaining this but... grab it and try it.

Just don't say I didn't warn you."
