Synopsis

Amazon.com
Former Tony Toni Toné guitarist Dwayne Wiggins returns with a solo album that, like the Tonyies' best, sounds like it was made without record-company interference. Eyes Never Lie isn't perfect--its lyrics are pretty ordinary--but it's a convincingly heartfelt statement by a talented, underrated musician. Marked by grooves even more laid-back than D'Angelo's, the CD finds Wiggins musing on love, family, and various social ills. (One tune interpolates Billie Holiday's classic anti-lynching song "Strange Fruit.") Friendly and serious, Eyes is an admirably modest set that should win Wiggins more of the recognition he deserves. --Rickey Wright

CD Reviews

.... It's like Butter baby, strictly Butter.

"Even though one of the greatest r&b groups are no longer together, Dwayne Wiggins, formerly of Tony!Toni!Tone!, does a good job of preserving the TTT sound that their fans are accustomed to. His first solo disc, "Eyes Never Lie", is a must have for any TTT fan. The CD follows the same format as Tony!Toni!Tone!'s last two albums, "Sons Of Soul" and "House Of Music". To tell you the truth, if you don't read the album credits before you hear the CD, you'll be waiting for Raphael Saadiq's voice. The CD's best track is clearly "Let's Make A Baby". This song will remind you of the slow songs that Dwayne sang the lead vocals to on past TTT CDs, like "Whatever You Want", "Slow Wine", "Til Last Summer" and "Holy, Smokes, And Gee Wiz". Another thing that I like about Dwayne Wiggins' CD is that he does not limit his song topics. Some of the CDs that are out now, even though I like them, just talk about one thing. "Eyes Never Lie" covers a range of topics and issues. Other highlights include the title track, "Strange Fruit", "Flower", and "Don't Sleep". Dwayne Wiggins has made an impressive solo CD. Any TTT fan will enjoy it."

"I purchased Dwayne Wiggins' CD on May 2nd. After listening to the CD for the first time, I listened to it again. The whole CD, from the first track to the last track, is HOT! The music on the CD is funky and all carry a message -- love for one another regardless of race. I believe everyone will enjoy this CD. Dwayne Higgins is brillant, and I hope he continues to share his talent with the world."

"Dwayne proved his musical talents and part of the force behind Toni Tone Tony. This is one CD I truly enjoy listening to from the 1st track to the last. These are rare finds. Its too bad he did not get more success with this CD. But he should feel personally rewarded by recording such a treat for true music listeners."
