CD Reviews

The real Bossa deal
Mauricio Bussab | Sao Paulo, SP Brazil | 12/16/2004
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is a new CD featuring one of the greatest composers from the Bossa Nova movement. His songs were recorded by just about anybody connected to the genre. Maybe you don't know the titles but you will know the songs... The recording is impecable, the guests speak for themselves (just look at the list above - oh my!!)... Classy, smooth, cool, made in Rio, by the people that invented Bossa Nova. You can't get more genuine than this..."

"Wow!That's all I could muster after listening to Batida Diferente. I felt as if I had been taken on a journey around Rio de Janeiro during the Golden Years of the Bossa Nova. It's hard to pick out the best track, especially since they are filled with special appearances from the most amazing Brazilian musicians. If you are true Bossa Nova fan , you must get this CD. Listen to it while it snows outside and I bet you'll forget about the winter ."
5-Star Bossa Nova beyond Jobim & Gilberto

"Bossa Nova music was born and raised in Rio de Janeiro!

Rio de Janeiro is the cultural capital city of Brazil where such people like Antonio Carlos Jobim and Joao Gilberto met and developed the most important Brazilian music style to gain international acknowledgement.

There is a big list of artists who has built Bossa Nova beyond Jobim and Gilberto. Some of which are well known to Americans and to the world. People like Deodato, Sergio Mendes, Leny Andrade, Marcos Valle, Joao Donato, Oscar Castro Neves, Luiz Eca & Tamba Trio who came along with Bossa Nova. People like Elis Regina, Milton Nascimento, Djavan, Gilberto Gil, Nana Caymmi, Dori Caymmi, and Caetano Veloso who came into the scene a little while after Bossa Nova though quite influenced by Bossa Nova.

Also there is a big list of artists who has built Bossa Nova but who are not known to Americans and to the world though they are legends of Bossa Nova in Brazil. People like Durval Ferreira, a jazzy instrumentalist when he plays his Bossa-stylished acoustic guitar while a tremendous melodist who was fated to write some of the dearest Bossa Nova standards. To name a few: A Chuva (The Day It Rained as it was recorded by Sarah Vaughan [1]), Tristeza de Nos Dois & Moca Flor (as recorded by Tamba 4/Tamba Trio [2]), Estamos Ai [3]& Batida Diferente as recorded by famous Leny Andrade, undoubtedly the biggest Ferreira's songs performer.

This CD pays for a long time debt of music industry to this great composer. It is a showcase of Durval Ferreira main output with fresh recordings from 2003 studio sessions with the best musicians in the place.

Most tracks in this CD are hip instrumental brilliant renditions of Mr. Ferreira's compositions. Also features vocal rendition of a new song by Leny Andrade, the great Lady of Bossa Nova. Sung in Portuguese.

Also showcases what one could imagine to be a live session in a music club in Rio de Janeiro. Refer to number #1 track "Estamos Ai" which was recorded by a 5-member group of the most talented saxophone soloists in Rio nowadays.

So there's no mistake. This CD is certainly a mandatory disc in a respectful Bossa Nova collection.

I invite you to come to Rio this summer and meet those incredible instrumentalists here and there showing their artistry in the music clubs. Durval Ferreira teams with them in the nightclubs, a perfect "carioca" (those who live in Rio are referred to as "cariocas"). Note: Summer in Rio de Janeiro begins December so that you can run away from cold and enjoy the tropical sun of Rio listening to the great Bossa Nova masters.

About Durval Ferreira @Amazon, also refer to my June 30, 2000 review to disc "Cannonball's Bossa Nova', a tremendous Bossa Nova tour-de-force with Sergio Mendes Bossa Rio Sextet. I wrote at that time: "It's madantory of a serious Bossa Nova collection. Also features Durval Ferreira on acoustic guitar; he's one of the most important Bossa Nova composers. Pay attention to his guitar phrases and basis. All stars."

[1] Refer to Sarah Vaughan's rendition of "The Day It Rained" with guitarrist Helio Delmiro, CD "I Love Brazil" - a Pablo Records title you also can find here @Amazon.

[2] Refer to Tamba 4's renditions of Tristeza de Nos Dois (CD "Samba Blim) and Moca Flor (CD "We and The Sea"). Both CDs on famous CTi Records. Note: Tamba 4 is famous Tamba Trio which has recorded with 1 more member in the CTi sessions. Tamba Trio member, Mr. Bebeto Castilho is featured in Durval Ferreira's CD.

[3] You can find CD 'Estamos Ai' by singer Leny Andrade here @Amazon. One of the most important albums of vocal Bossa Nova. Arrangements by Deodato. Musicians: all the best in the place 1965 Rio de Janeiro. The title song was a big instrumental hit. Ms. Andrade's rendition was the original one with lyrics plus a sensational scat singing which became historical and famous. A must-have album."
