Amazon.comDudu Tucci is a master drummer from Brazil who has been based in Germany for several years. Perhaps he should go home for a visit. His earlier releases for WeltWunder were primarily about drums and voice, overdubbed but still faithful to homegrown batucada and afoxe sources. The present album, however, incorporates bewildering and haphazard electronic sounds that clash with the percussion and each other. Tucci blunders aimlessly into flaccid Euro-jazz and New Age clichés, laying on riffs lifted from gamelan, Mike Oldfield, and Deuter with a trowel. The resulting constructions lack focus both within themselves and in relation to the surrounding tracks. An amalgam of so many conflicting styles could have been fashioned into a sonic travelogue of some kind. As it stands, the vistas are obscured and the destination unclear. --Christina Roden
