CD Reviews

Time has been kind to this one.....

"I recall eagerly purchasing this LP some twenty-five years ago. As a big fan of Les Dudek's first three records, I was eager for more. Unfortunately this was very much a group effort and Les' role was somewhat restrained. That coupled with the "poppish" quality of the tunes and the slick production had me dismiss the record as a sell-out. I would have to wait for Les' '81 album "Gypsy Ride" for my next fix.

Fast-forward to the present and I was very happy to see the folks at Wounded Bird putting out a domestic issue of this title (they have also put out a couple of Les' other titles including "Gypsy"). Hearing it now with older ears and different expectations, the quality of the craft and the strong group dynamic of DFK plays much better. Les' role remains somewhat understated, however as a whole the whole "supergroup" concept which was behind this lineup stands up very well. The songwriting meshes while the different vocalists just serve to spotlight the different facets of the group.

"It's All About You" has an anthemic FM radio feel and in hindsight I'm surprised it wasn't a big hit. Les' "Be Happy" predates Bobby McFerrin's annoying conveyance of the same sentiment by a decade.

The bonus live tracks show that this was more than a studio-supergroup but also a band that could tear it up live. Here we get a pair of performances that are polished yet bristle with the engergy of live rock 'n roll music.

So as the title of the review says, from my standpoint the years have been very kind to this release and it now occupies a welcome place among my collected Les Dudek discography."
What an amazing album

"I had this album on vinyl in the early 80's............it is so great to find it available on disc. 3 talented musicians playing rock/blues/jazz.

This is a great disc. It is intended to be listened to from beginning to end in one sitting, without interruption. Oh yeah, and play it loud.

This is a "can't lose" purchase.

Also, check out Les Dudek, Ghost Town Parade."
