CD Reviews

Unusual, lovely, abstract, 1973!

"Here's a fun find for the truly intrepid music fan. Mixing psychedelic melodies, electronic sounds, and speeches from radio and television, this CD is unlike anything you've ever heard. There's essentially three songs (with lyrics included in the liner notes) buried in the wash of music that comprises the two 25 minute tracks on Dreamies. Ahead of it's time but still Of it's time, this concept album is an interesting trip well worth taking. Here's the text from the back of the disc: "What's a Dreamie? Here's what some people have said: A significant contribution to the arts. It's like some kind of futuristic rock and roll. A mental mystery movie. A beautiful experience- like a good dream. Super music. Technological simulation of consciousness. Electronic imagery. A fairytale. A subliminal political message. Garbage. Magnificent. Insane. Challenging- it's like a riddle. A jigsaw puzzle for the intellect. Euphoria. Fun. Happy. Trash. An incredible patchwork of people, places, and things set to music. Headmusic. Therapy.""
An absolute delight! How the dream of the 1960s felt ...

""Dreamies" is an apt title for this wonderful collage of speech snippets, synthesizer sounds & Lennonesque songs, since it flows with the eerie, otherworldly quality of an ongoing dream. And it's a specific dream, as well: the dream of the 1960s, both remembered & eulogized at once. For those too young to know what the 1960s were really like, you could do far worse than immerse yourself in this mesmerizing mixture of aspiration, inspiration & sheer sonic pleasures. Needless to say, it's especially good heard through headphones in the dark! :)

I love that creator Bill Holt quit his Fortune 500 job to make this haunting gem in his basement. And I'm equally happy that he's making new music today, which I look forward to hearing whenever it's released. Meanwhile, "Dreamies" is available now, in all of its compelling, trippy, magical mystery glory -- most highly recommended!"
Oh, those carbunkles, oh those warts.

"The first time you hear "Dreamies" you'll be disoriented, uncomfortable and perhaps frightened. However, it gets better and better with every passing year. I suggest a glass of brew to help you relax. I like to follow "Dreamies" with Zeppelin II, side 2, song 3 to change the mood. As it says, in Program 11 "trust, you must trust.""
