CD Reviews

Doris Day at her best
12/22/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I own several Doris Day albums, and I consider this one of her best. I play it over and over. I love all the songs on the "I Have Dreamed" album. I find myself pressing the repeat button on "When I Grow Too Old To Dream" and "All I Do Is Dream of You." These are the best versions of both songs that I have ever heard. The piano on "All I Do.." is fantastic; whoever you are, KUDOS! I also love the cover song "I Have Dreamed." I had heard the song many times, but I never noticed how beautiful it was until Doris Day sang it. How nice to have a Noel Coward song. Coward wrote some fantastic music and "Someday I'll Find You" is one of his best. Doris Day does it justice. The liner notes include the original album covers. The original notes for "I Have Dreamed" were written by Pete Martin for the Saturday Evening Post. Well done Mr. Martin! He uses the word "velvet" to describe Miss Day's voice; he is right on mark. This is a 2-album CD. The second album is a lucky find. It includes some little-known material done especially for this album as well as some better known material from Doris Day's movies. "Heart Full of Love" has a beautiful 60's sound. I wonder why it wasn't a hit. Getting both ablums on one CD makes it a real bargain. If you are thinking about it, buy it. You won't be disappointed."
Doris Day: "I Have Dreamed" -- A Classic!
James Harbert Music | Studio City, CA USA | 08/01/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"The re-released Sony CD ("I Have Dreamed") is Doris Day at her loveliest and dreamiest. Classical divas (from the Met, no less) have told me how they marvel at Doris Day's vocal sensitivity, her consummate musical phrasing, and her ability to turn a popular lyric into sheer poetry. The ballads on this CD are beauties. My personal favorites are Rodgers' & Hammerstein's "I Have Dreamed" and "All I Do Is Dream of You." I'm also particularly fond of the song "I Believe in Dreams." This may reflect a slight bias on my part. (I wrote it!) I also did the orchestral arrangements, conducted, and (yes) played the solo piano accompaniment on "All I Do Is Dream of You." I was pretty young when we made the album for Columbia Records. It's another example of Doris's legendary kindness (not only to animals) that she trusted me with great songs by the likes of Noel Coward, Kurt Weill, her friend Paul Francis Webster, and Livingston and Evans who wrote the incredibly beautiful "We'll Love Again" which Doris sang in the Alfred Hitchcock film, "The Man Who Knew Too Much."I'm happy that "I Have Dreamed" has received such glowing reviews. All I can add is: I did my best to match the loveliness, delicacy and beauty of her performances. All I can add about Doris Day? She is incomparable."
Doris Day - The Best Pop Female Singer - Ever!
Oliver Penn | 12/18/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Even though she doesn't get her "props", Doris Day is the best female singer of them all. You don't hear her getting the praise that she so richly deserves, they give it all to Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, even Perry Como, but not to Miss Day, who almost single-handedly saved the movie musical from extinction when she became an instant success after her first film. But singers, real singers, seem to come up with her name when "the best" is spoken about. I've heard such people as Aretha Franklin and Diana Ross mention her as one of their favorites when growing up. When Bob Hope was asked to name the greatest singers, he paused and said, "Frank Sinatra, Doris Day and Judy Garland."Her voice is hard to describe. Many people call it "dreamy". Yes, it is that, but it's much, much more. There is an urgency to tell the truth and to tell it to ONE PERSON. Rosemary Clooney described her as "being very personal" with a song. I agree. I love putting on my earphones late at night and just lisening to Doris Day "go". "I Have Dreamed" is by far, the best version I have ever heard. I've owned the lp for years (...) and I also own the original lp of "Listen to Day".Now, I'll buy this two CD set for the incredible sound I'm sure it has. After I bought all of the Bear Family sets (sooo much music!), but not all of Doris' vast output, I heard "Kiss Me Again, Stranger" for the first time. I fell desperately in love with this song and Doris' intimate performance. Absolutely flawless.I know that Miss Day has turned down the Kennedy Center Honor and the American Film Institute's tribute, but I wish she'd accept the Grammy Legend or Lifetime Achievement Award and a special Oscar for her tremendous contributions to both the music and film worlds. Both of these albums are great and I plan to enjoy them for years to come."
