CD Reviews

Great West Coast Doo-wop
Jon R. Wittman Re/Max | San Marino, Ca United States | 11/23/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"As teenager in L.A. during the fifties and a budding R&B record collector, these were the sounds I grew to love. Dootone was the best label for West Coast vocal groups and I had most of these on 45 & 78 RPM. It now takes a British Co. to bring these recordings back to us and they do a great job. This disc has 28 songs on it and only a few are dogs and most of the rest are simply great. Ace has mixed upbeat numbers with the slow tunes and has found some unreleased gems that are not odd ball cutouts, but recordings that are great. Listen to the cuts by the Debonairs and Cuff-Links and wonder why they weren't released. A couple of sides are very strange like the truly weird song by "Johnny Two Voice", who sings from low bass to a dreadful high tenor within a few notes. Most of these songs are examples of how good this kind of music can be. the Medalions, Meadowlarks, Calvanes, Romancers and Cuff-links etc. were just local high school kids who brought their talent and youthful lust for life into Dootsie Williams studio. Just listen to these guys jam on songs like Speedin, Honey Gee and Ay Si Si. Listen with your loved one to the slow tunes like "Lawful Wedding and Your Heavenly" and let the music take you back to a more gentler time when Doo-Wop was the thing. Buy this disc and then volumes 1 & 3, you won't be disappointed with the selections, the good sound quality or the great the price."
