CD Reviews

Out of this World
Todd Krainin | Los Angeles | 05/11/2004
(5 out of 5 stars)

"There are three great unsolved mysteries of the universe as we know it: what is at the bottom of a black hole, can free will exist in a world governed by the chaos of quantum mechanics, and why isn't Dominique Eade a household name? Given her voice, song writing, good looks, and the recent breakthroughs of Diana Krall and Jane Monheit (both solid, but not really in a league with Dominique) it's a bit vexing.

I first heard her sing "Crazeology" and "New Waltz" on the radio over a decade ago, and the spell hasn't yet worn off. I never thought much of the Frank Loesser showtune, "If I Were a Bell", but when Dominque Eade sings it, it's like happiness let loose from an uncorked bottle.

Is Dominique's music too smart for a general audience? (I'd like to think better of audiences). Is she too "old-fashioned"? (Listen closer) Or maybe it doesn't really matter. As long as she continues to release music on her own terms, my ears will be more than satisfied."
