"forgotten" gifted jazz pianist
Swing King | Cincinnati, OH USA | 02/10/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Dolo Coker (1927-1983) may not have been a very well-known jazz pianist or composer, but he sure did have talent. "California Hard" is a testament to Coker's mastermind and genius. Recorded on December 27, 1976 this session includes the following fellow sidemen: Blue Mitchell (trumpet, flugelhorn), Art Pepper (alto and tenor sax), Leroy Vinnegar (bass) and Frank Butler (drums). Coker is just one of many other terrific jazz musicians overlooked today, despite having played with legends such as Ben Webster, Dexter Gordon and Sonny Stitt.

The sound quality on these tracks is generally of a high quality, and the group plays together as the friends they were. On the previous day the same musicians, with the exception of Art Pepper, recorded Coker's debut album under the title "Dojo!". This is assertive West Coast hard bop sure to bring news fans to Coker, and will equally be enjoyed by Pepper and Mitchell fans. A nice selection to add to anyone's collection here.
