A Sonic Feast to kick your ass...
somebody | NYC | 05/21/2000
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Nick Didkovsky, known for his eccentric experimentation as composer/guitarist, has lead his Doctor Nerve project into the escapist tonal realms of apocalyptic sonic deconstruction. With EREIA, his troops, alongside the Sirius String Quartet, orchestrate a savage set of painstaking compositions and conducted improvisations. Committed to molten, avant-rock-jazz that can go from one to sixty in two seconds, stopping on a dime, the ensemble funnel ideas of limitless possibility into a single cohesive work. In three demanding movements, EREIA pushes the creative, technical, and emotional boundaries between the two worlds of classical and avant-garde rock music. The first movement, grouped into four quirky sections, is played with clinical precision by the string quartet. Setting the tone, it leads into "For Being Nice to the Wrong People" a movement full of relentless energy and crazed improvisations. Recorded live at the Knitting Factory in New York City, the movement brings an extra edge to the overall mood of the performance. The bridge-like cacophonies in the live section seamlessly lead directly back into the more through composed third movement. Incorporating complex rhythmic developments, and thorn-like harmonic progressions, Doctor Nerve always amaze with their own unique brand of musicianship in a modern age where anything goes."
