CD Reviews

Mellow flugelhorn that's unmistakenly Doc
DunwoodyHasDesign | Minneapolis, MN | 01/01/2010
(4 out of 5 stars)

"I didn't remember much about this album from the 70's except having a favorable overall impression. It's fun to hear these songs again. The tracks are listed in small print on the cover image but these were the highlights for me: If, Poor Butterfly, Misty, and Brian's Song. I hope that whoever has the rights releases more of Doc's albums (especially Sixteen Great Performances) on CD, so I'm happy to support them with this purchase."
Smooth as silk

"I had this album in 4-channel stereo long ago and loved it.

Doc's flugelhorn playing is very elegant and restrained (when you know how he could have picked up his trumpet and soared at any time).

He takes a simple melody and adds just the right nuance and ornaments to make it completely original and fresh.

Hank Mancini's arrangements are pure and solid - there will never be another like him - love his use of the horn and trombone sections laying down that rich pad of sound for the solos.

The song choices bring back great memories - the Carpenter's 'Sometimes'

Thanks for adding this classic to the Doc and Mancini catalogues for us."
