Synopsis

Instrumental albums from Walt Disney's mega-empire are a rarity. But judging from the excellence of Disney's Lullaby Album--from the superb arrangements to the surprise song choices--you'll probably be hearing more of them. Producer and arranger Fred Mollin exhibits not only good taste and restraint in his approach, but his song choices sweetly complement one another. Treading the fine line between Muzak and genuinely soothing music, Mollin lands softly and sentimentally on such Disney movie song classics as "Baby Mine," "When You Wish upon a Star," and "Stay Awake/Feed the Birds," as well as on other chestnuts such as "Brahms Lullaby" and Kenny Loggins's "House at Pooh Corner." The real delights, though, are the Beatles' "I Will" (rendered beautifully on piano and strings), Louis Armstrong's timeless "What A Wonderful World," the classic "Beautiful Dreamer," the old doo-wop favorite "Good Night My Love (Pleasant Dreams)," and an inspired reprise of "Brahms Lullaby" joined with Gershwin's "Someone to Watch over Me." Complete with sleeping tips from psychology professor Jodi Mindell, Disney's Lullaby Album almost guarantees that you'll fall asleep before the baby does--for all the right reasons. --Martin Keller

"We bought this CD of lullabies based on the reviews and received several other lullaby CDs from friends as gifts. Of all the albums, this was the hands-down winner and has become the staple of our nap and bedtime routine.

Initially, we started playing music for naptime only, and varied the CDs, but we noticed that this CD seemed to be most effective at lulling him to sleep, and we now use this for all naps and many bedtimes. My son will ask for this CD if he's having trouble falling asleep at night- even at his most cranky, he is soothed and calmed, and he knows that the music helps him. Most surprising to me is that I've come to really love this CD myself- I was a little skeptical that it would be schmaltzy, but it's really quite charming and sweet. It's a testament to the arrangers that I still want to listen to it after hearing it multiple times a day for two years. I even find myself singing along to the songs sometimes! We are actually buying a second copy for our new baby's room- I have a feeling this will be a lifelong family favorite.

Reasons this CD works so well:

- Instrumental, no lyrics- we found this to be very important in helping our son "shut down" his active toddler brain

- Tempo of songs similar enough so no jarring transitions

- Volume of songs even throughout

- Length of CD is just long enough to ensure the child is sleeping when the music ends"
I love this album!

"I play this album every night when I put my daughter to bed to let her know it's time to go to sleep. It works. Not once have I had a problem with getting her to sleep. Even after many listens, I have not got sick of this album yet. After a rough day, I look forward to it. These songs were crafted with a great deal of quality and are very enjoyable even after many listens. The music is soothing and beautiful. Volume 2 is good, too."
