"In spite of being a monophonic recording (1954), Fricsay's version is a very fluid, brilliant, beautiful, incisive, and very theatrical one. The scene of Tamino with the Sprecher in the Temple of Wisdom has a Greek grandeur. The whole version is a beautiful combination of grace and charm with philosophical seriousness. Fischer-Dieskau is superb as Papageno; Haefliger, an excellent Tamino: he shows why he was Fricsay's favourite tenor; Maria Stader, with her fresh and lyrical soprano voice, is a very sensitive Pamina; Rita Streich, as the Queen of the Night, is one of the best in records because of the full command of her coloratura; Josef Greindl, an impressive Sarastro, as well as Kim Borg as the Sprecher. Fricsay at his best. Highly recommendable."
