CD Reviews

Diane's studio swan song for GRP
James Fenos | Columbus, OH United States | 02/18/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"What a great way to close a chapter on a career. "Blues For Schuur" allows Diane yet another album featuring wordplay using her last name, and is her swan song for the label that she was long associated with. This album isn't really a blues album as it is a jazz album with shades of blues, mainly it's an album of standards featuring a full horn section and the selection of songs includes swing pieces. "All Right, O.K., You Win (I'm In Love With You)" is a swinger, full of optimism not found on a blues album, the same to be said for "Toodle Loo On Down." I think the idea here is to makes the blues a bit more fun. "Someone To Love" and "Stormy Monday Blues" will be re-written in history as songs Diane made famous, her renditions of these two songs should be regarded as definitive. As always, the singing is without fault, the mastering is a bit loud but well done."
THE BEST

"I can't believe know one has reviewed this CD. It has to one of Miss Schuur's best - if not THE BEST of her albums. If you like Diane's other CD's, or if you like real bluesy jazz, "Blues For Schuur" is a must for your collection."
DIANE'S AT HER BEST WHEN SHE'S SWINGIN'...

"... and I'd have to agree that, along with Pure Schuur, this is probably Deedles' best recording - there's some terrific big band arrangements here."
