CD ReviewsShe might just go on to become the next big diva. Indie-Music.com | 11/22/2005 (4 out of 5 stars) "Dian Diaz has made a name for herself by singing at a lounge in Las Vegas. But the sound of this disc reveals an artist who clearly doesn't want to end up as just another aging lounge act. She has a well-trained voice, and with the right material, she might just go on to become the next big diva.
The one diva this disc brings to mind most is Whitney Houston. A couple of these ballads, namely "No More Tears" and "Willing To Love," sound the most like Houston. It's Diaz's Latin heritage and sound, however, that sets her apart from many of the other top divas of today. Such Latin sounds run especially through "Remember How We Danced," "Get With You," and "Just Ain't Feeling It." This disc is not all ballads, even though the album is a bit on the ballad-heavy side. "Colour Everywhere" is finger-snapping soul, in a bit of a contrast, and "Lay It On The Line" is R&B lite. One other positive factor about Diaz is that she writes some of her own material. And the few songs she's contributed here are good ones, too. Once upon a time, great singers simply weren't expected to have the ability to write. But audiences today expect a little more than just a pretty face and voice from their artists. Only time will tell if Diaz breaks through with her Latin-influenced pop. But if that happens, I wouldn't really be surprised. -- Dan MacIntosh, Indie-Music.com" |
