Synopsis

Album Description
With his piano trio in the traditional key of joy, B flat major, Dvoøák ? either knowingly or unknowingly ? was continuing in the tradition of his two favorite composers, Mozart and Schubert. In contrast to Dvoøák, Bedrich Smetana (1824-1884) left only three chamber music works of importance, one of which is performed here by The Devich Trio. Three cultures, three languages, and three temperaments make up The Devich Trio: Hungarian pianist Hanna Devich, Dutch cellist Jasper Havelaar, and South African violinist Sarah Oates. Hanna Devich, born in Budapest, graduated cum laude from the Franz Liszt Academy in 1991 with a diploma in piano solo performance. She had master classes with György Sebok, Zoltán Kocsis, and György Kurtag. For several years she has lived and performed in the Netherlands, active as soloist, chamber music artist, and on radio broadcasts. Born in Johannesburg, Sarah Oates began her violin studies at age nine and was soon winning prizes. In 1! 992 she won a scholarship to study in London. After master classes with Pinchas Zukerman and Yehudi Menuhin, she embarked on a successful concert career. Dutch cellist Jasper Havelaar, who began his studies at the age of eight, started his career in 1994 after completing his education at the Rotterdam Conservatory. The number of the trio?s concert engagements is increasing every year, with bookings in Holland, Germany, Belgium, France, Hungary, and South Africa. In November 2004 their first CD was released on Fineline from Challenge Records, and was received enthusiastically by the press.
