"This is a must have for any Elgar or choral music admirers. This 2-CD set contains a historic recording of Elgar's amazing oratorio "The Dream of Gerontius" conducted by Benjamin Britten, performed by London Symphony Orchestra and Chorus with King's College Choir (Cambridge)...The soloists are excellent too: Yvonne Minton, Peter Pears and John-Shirley Quirk, the last two soloists are Britten's most admired vocal solosists too. (Especially Peter Pears, because of the composer's lover!!!)...Especially, prelude of the work is very impressive, noble. I think that, still, this is (with Enigma Variations) the composer's most famous and beautiful work. I think this oratorio in the same level with Handel's Messiah and Mendelssohn's Elijah...And the performance is marvellous, too. I think, this recording is in the same level with Elgar's own recording (made in 1930'sreleased on EMI).And there are beautiful two more work: Delius's famous "Sea Drift" cantata, conducted by Richard Hickox, and Holst's "The Hymn of Jesus, conducted by the composre's close friend Sir Adrian Boult, performed by BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. And these two works are very good examples of 20th Centaury Choral Music. This set has the librettos of all works, too. This is an essential recording and highly recommended."
