CD Reviews

Better than ever
Dan Bergevin | CapitalizedLiving.com | 07/04/2010
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Liumin is one of the best minimalist dub albums to be released in recent memory. On playlists and in live mixes it will fit snugly against Soultek, Intrusion, Variant, Convexion, Maurizio, Gas, and The Sight Below. It's very different than any of these, and much more unique in many regards. But it's still right up this alley and down some surprising side-streets that will become more evident with repeated listens.

It's hard to compare this to The Coldest Season because they are very different albums. All I can say is get them both, throw in Deepchord's Vantage Isle Sessions, and upgrade your headphones. You'll have a very happy summer."

"These guys keeping pushing the envelope. Just when you thought dub tech had become derivative, Hitchell and Modell push it in a different direction. This isn't The Coldest Season and it isn't Hitchell's Intrusion project.

Whereas on most of their other releases the "dub" bass is at the forefront, on some of these tracks, especially the first one, it is lurking in the background. The field recordings and other random static is more in the foreground; rather than seeking out the patterns emerging from the dub, the listener is seeking out the bass from amidst the random noises of life. They've basically flipped the scrip.

As you continue to flow into the album, they venture deeper into the bass, most notably on the 'BCN Dub' track. Some of the tracks have an almost danceable groove. The 'icy' feel of The Coldest Season still emerges but this one has added some sunshine.

They've basically taken what worked before and added depth to it. Each track blends seamlessly into the next as the listener goes deeper into the analog.

It's definitely a top ten for 2010. Don't expect, just listen.

The bonus CD of reworked field recordings is a special treat and makes this one well worth owning."
