DeYoung's Masterpiece
08/07/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Dennis DeYoung recorded three outstanding solo efforts in the 1980's and, in my estimation, should have stayed a solo act. His work was that good. His voice is his number one asset and it is shown off to great effect here. And of course, his superior keyboarding abilities are also displayed.
Boomchild is a five star recording in every sense of the word. The title track sums up in short, spot-on phrases, the entire baby boom generation.
Harry's Hands is a commentary on the working man that easily holds its own with those by Billy Joel (Allentown) and Springsteen (Born in the USA). Oustide Looking in Again is a haunting song of loss. Won't Go Wasted is similar in theme with a more hopeful outcome.
The Best is Yet to come is a synth driven rocker that gets you on your feet.
The rest of the tracks are equally top notch. Not a bad song on this entire CD.
It is a must-have collector's item from an artist of superior talent."

"The songs "BoomChild" and "Harry's Hands" make this worth buying. These could have been Styx songs. Should've been Styx songs. The rest of the album is mostly, of course, Dennis trying to recreate "Babe". Ugh. "Who Shot Daddy" in retrospect is kind of a laughable tune at this point.

I've been a Dennis fan forever, but his solo work doesn't stand up that well when compared to his Styx work (Pre-1983). The songs "BoomChild" and "Harry's Hands" stand up to anything that he did in that band. They could've been off of the "Crystal Ball" album. Unfortunately, the rest of his solo stuff DOES NOT. Very whimpy guitar sounds on most of them. Sounds like they were played through some kind of transistor radio. Also, Dennis used to play really awesome keyboards with great solos and really innovative playing. Now, it's almost like he just kind of pads the songs out.

Having said that, his "10 on Broadway" album is really good, yet he didn't write any of it. It doesn't rock, but it stands up and doesn't have a 'dated' feel to it.

Sorry Dennis, but I know you can do better."

"Boomchild is a creative cd. The lyrics are cleverly written and every song has a great beat to it. This cd is not quite as good as Desert Moon but still wonderful! It's a little more "mature" sounding. The highlight songs are "The Best is Yet to Come" "Harry's Hands", "Boomchild", "Who Shot Daddy" and "Won't go Wasted." If you are a Dennis DeYoung fan you will LOVE this cd! You will not regret buying Boomchild! It proves just how wonderful 80s music is!"
