"I first heard this album at the home of an uncle, and had to have it. With 20 selections, it is a fine representative sampling of traditional Mexican ballads. The songs are rendered in a clear and compelling style, with spare and haunting guitar accompaniment on fourteen of the melodies. Five others ("Flor Silvestre", "La Malaguena", "Dolor de Mi Dolor", "Se Me Hizo Facil", and El Profugo") have mariachi accompaniment, although only "Dolor de Mi Dolor" has an upbeat tempo. On the remaining number, "Estrellita Marinera", Zaizar's voice is accompanied by marimba as well as guitar. This is NOT a CD to liven up your parties; Most of the songs have a truly melancholy feel to them. But for the listener wishing to experience the depth of emotion typical of the best of traditional Mexican songs as they were played in days gone by, this CD is highly recommended."
