"My father first let me hear this album when I was about 15 years old. It just so happens he had it on wax with all the snap crackle and pop on it. Considering I was into Isaac Hayes, I really got into the story behind the album. David Porter takes the listeners through his heart-felt love story of a man in love with another man's woman. This album preceeded all the skits that have become popular in most rap albums. If you listen to "The Masquerade is Over" you can hear where rappers such as LL Cool J, The RZA, Biggie Smalls (Who shot ya) and Prince Paul all sampled Porter's Memphis String's sound. For all the Stax sounds fans, this is a must have. Trust a 24 year old funk fan...it's a classic!"

"Mr. Porter's music is outstanding. He not only sings but write as well. David Porter is still well beyond my expectations after all these years. I was first introduce to his magical songs by my brother. Hang On Sloopy still flows through my mind even though I heard it over 25 years ago. My brother had all three of David Porter's albums. Unfortunately time, people and age has done them in, and I'm sorry to say that to date no copies of "Gritty, Groovy and Gettin It" or "Into the Real Thing" are available. Therefore, I as well as many other of his fans will be denied the pleasure of hearing his other treasured songs, such as "It's Over (The Masquerade)," "I Can't See You When I Want To," "Hand On Sloopy" et.al. And this my friends is a crime."

"I really enjoyed being able to listen to this particular album/CD in my adult years, it brings back happy family memories. However, Mr. Porter had recorded a couple of other albums before this one. One in particular I'm looking for has a song on it called "Hang on Sloopy" or "Snoopy" this is the song I would really love hearing again, but unfortunately, I can't find his previous albums anywhere. Any assistance or suggestions you or our fellow music lovers have to offer will be truly appreciated."

"While I would typically applaud any performer who embarks on a concept album--especially considering the era when this was produced--in this case I have to say thumbs down due to the fifteen minutes of boring storyline "acted" by David & Company. Thankfully on CD you can skip the awful dialogue interludes, whereas on vinyl you'd actually have to suffer through, for example, David's "buddy" calling him a "faggot" every time you played side two. Really. In fact he says it twice. Not the vibe I want blaring out of my HiFi, then or now.
Wonder why this album was a flop.
It's a shame really, because seven of the eight songs are top notch soul performances. The eighth song "Storm In The Summertime" would've been stellar had it not been mixed with a ridiculously scratched-up rainstorm effect record. Laughably bad production work from engineers who knew better (even then), which comes off sounding like the song was mastered from a dirty 45 RPM single.
I'd love to give this CD five stars for the music tracks alone, but the slur mentioned above spoils the goofy innocence of the concept and knocks it down a point."

"This is a good album, not to the level of "Gritty Groovy and Gettin' It" or "Into A Real Thing", but if you are a fan of D.P. you need to have this in your collection. I have these two on wax and would love to have them reissued and add to my cd collection.
There are a couple or real gems here that I love to listen to."
