CD Reviews

Berkman's album gives you that grateful feeling.
05/04/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"David Berkman's "Hand Made" is perfectly titled. This is such a well crafted ensemble with a collective confidence to go anywhere the music takes them. Each member, whether soloing or backing up, is listening intensely to the entire sound. Berkman's comping and rhythmic ideas grow right out Brian Blade's exquisite and nimble drumming, giving over to Harrel's next discovery. Only a great leader could have made this album as good as it is. And Berkman is a great leader. But you are not buying one musician's album. Although the compositions are Berkman's, (and they are true originals--he is a composer interested in all the sounds of his instrument--just listen to "Pennies") the album is about five men who chose to come together to listen where the sound takes them. Bound together to that sound, they are free men. Listen to this......."
An album of consummate beauty and great craftsmanship
Ian Muldoon | Coffs Harbour, NSW Australia | 09/19/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"An album of consummate beauty with a very high standard of craft by ALL concerned (more than a band - five brothers, five lovers, you name it)with the genuine "sound of surprise "found in the best improvised music which has been programmed brilliantly by some who have a keen sense of the understanding of the dynamics of sound. A very satisfying listening experience by an artist who must be a gentle and loving man if the compositions and their arrangements are any guide. Warmly recorded by Mr A. MacDonald who truly does this great music justice."
