Synopsis

Amazon.com
In this solo piano recital, Brubeck, 83, looks back on his experiences as a young army private in the closing year of the Second World War. It's a journey marked by songs as significant for their titles and unsung lyrics as their melodies. Classics like "Where or When" appear alongside playful period novelties like "Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree" and "It's a Sin to Tell a Lie," with Brubeck finding unexpected depths in these lightweight themes, touching on the experiences that shaped his generation. His version of "Last Time I Saw Paris" conveys all the complexity and ambiguity of wartime, and he also plays early original compositions--"We Crossed the Rhine" and "Weep No More"--shaped by the same experience. [The limited edition includes an enlightening second CD of Brubeck reminiscing with Walter Cronkite about leading a band at the front.] --Stuart Broomer

CD Reviews

Brubeck didn't need Desmond for this one
Roy Bennett | Gardnerville, NV USA | 06/03/2004
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Even at 83, Brubeck shows that he is still a giant of the piano.
In remembering his days in the army during WWII he has chosen
some of the greatest songs of the era and has performed them
masterfully, in a way that only he could. Being one of his generation, I just listened with nostalgia and in awe.
For a jazz fan or a piano solo afficinado (or both) it doesn't
get any better than this. And don't pass up the 2nd CD in the
album - the reminisisces of he and Walter Cronkite make an excellent compliment to the music."
Music only, but what good music it is!

"The "interview disc" existed only on a limited run of this set; what Amazon is shipping now does not include the interview disc.

The music speaks for itself."
Great Solo Piano Music and a Very Good Recording

"The music is written and played in an entertaining and engaging manner by Brubeck. Not many musicians can deliver this kind of sound today. Telarc has done a very good job with the recording. I highly recommend this disk."
