CD Reviews

LMAO! What a great example of country music!

"I've been waiting almost 3 years for this record to come out, and I think it's been worth the wait.

After a 2+ year struggle with his label, Ray decided that he'd rather do it on his own. He's taken a big risk, and has probably missed out on some money as a result. But if you listen to his music, you'll understand who he is, and why he'd rather stay true to himself and self-distribute his record.

Ray is a rural North Carolina boy with a deep, rich voice and a penchant for the classics. This is an extremely bold call, but he may be the closest thing to Waylon Jennings we ever see in this lifetime. He's an outlaw through and through, and his traditional style and tongue-in-cheek lyrics not only have you tappin' your boots and nodding your head, but also have you rolling around on the ground laughing.

Just listen to the first track, "Hell Got Raised Again Tonight" and you'll know what I mean. It reminds me of the Merle Haggard classic, "Think I'll Just Stay Here and Drink."

He mixes his deep Southern-drawled voice in with twangy Telecaster guitar picking and dominant steel guitar riffs to make this authentically country. This music has next to nothing in common with what you hear on Country Radio; which is also why he had to create his own Indie label to release it, and record half the tracks in his buddy (and lead guitarist/co-writer) Philip Moore's Spare Bedroom.

I won't go into song by song detail, but every song on this album is solid, and honestly, any country fan tired of the same old sugary garbage that litters pop-country radio will do themselves a huge favor by buying this record.

It is only available via digital mp3 download on Amazon.com or you can order his CD from his personal site. Mine was autographed.

Please, just trust me, from one country music fan to another. Buy this man's record and support him. You will not regret it. I guarantee you.

His first album is also outstanding. My Kind of Music"
Blending the best of outlaw and traditional country...

"There's a reason Ray Scott released his CD on his own Jethropolitan label: his music is simply too good to garner much airplay. His debut album, the aptly-titled MY KIND OF MUSIC, proved that. Aside from the name-dropping title tune (albeit a good song), it was an album of solid country tunes, with an outlaw grove, a record perhaps a few years behind the times--and, because of that, a record unique in the country world today. Other artists released similar records with slightly more success (Trent Tomlinson and Jamey Johnson come immediately to mind, though there were a couple others, I believe).

Scott, seeing that his music would not tempt bigger labels to take a chance, released the music on his own. Thank God he released it...it continues the outlaw/everyday man vein of his debut release, all with that groovy, traditional baritone. The songs, on first listen, don't quite stack up to the original...but repeated listenings prove that this is a successful and worthy follow-up. Tunes like "Poor Folks" and "Hell Got Raised" sing of the redneck life (with only brief forrays into the radio-ready "hickdom" that contaminates too much of today's country music). The witty "Ashtray on a Motorcycle" is followed by the tongue-in-cheek "Everybody's Girlfriend," which Scott sings almost deadpan. "Do It With the Lights On" gets right in your face (pun not intended), while "You Ain't Takin' This Hard Enough" groves along, and the title track digs into the downside of the honky-tonk lifestyle. Only the final two tracks slow the album down much, and even they are far better than most of what gets put out in Nashville today.

So buy Scott's album. Why should you? Let me lead by example: Before downloading this album from Amazon, I had never downloaded a single song from the Internet before. I'm a CD junkie, what can I say? But I just had to have this album. And I don't regret my abandoning the CD format in the slightest. This album is worth it. Ray Scott's music needs to be heard--it is real, genuine country music, un-tampered with, gloriously imperfect, and full of heart and soul."
