And Thrilling Dreams They Be
John C. Graham | toronto, ontario Canada | 10/30/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"An absolutely magnificent recording of a criminally under-rated tenor player. With wonderful British pianist Brian Lemon, bassist Len Skeat's strong walking figures, and drummer extrordinaire Butch Miles added to the mix, the stage was set for some stellar music making. They did not disappoint in any way.

Whether the tunes are up tempo or ballads there is an irrepressable coiled tension in the playing that adds dramatically to the listeners pleasure. Danny Moss will explode into a solo with Butch Miles sizzling cymbal attack urging him along. Just when Moss's solo seems to have reached a peak, a throbbing bass line will momentarily take over. Butch Miles then kicks up a storm on the toms and Moss enters again, soaring higher than ever. It's thrilling to listen to these guys perform.

As with many Nagel Heyer discs, you get well over an hour's worth of superbly recorded jazz. This is a disc full of music that will never grow old and, when played, will always cause those goosebumps to rise. Few tenor saxophonists could create that amount of drama in their playing. Danny Moss was an absolute master of such things and this recording is all the proof you will need. As thrilling a jazz record you are likely to find."
