CD Reviews

One of her less expensive albums... With some exquisite gems
dooby | 02/17/2007
(4 out of 5 stars)

"This is one of her few albums that go for below $20 on Amazon. Despite the relatively low cost, it does contain a few gems. It opens with the breezily upbeat "Geef Me Je Droom" (Give Me Your Dream) followed by the lovely ballad "Volg Je Natuur" (Follow Your Nature). My favourite here is the exquisite "Als Een Lied" (Like A Song), a gentle hymn to love. "Voor Eeuwig" (For Ever) is a Dutch cover version of Queen's "Who Wants To Live Forever?" from the original "Highlander" film. "Put On Your White Sombrero" is a straight-forward cover of one of ABBA's Spanish-influenced songs, complete with guitars and castanets. The arrangement is practically identical to ABBA's original. It is also one of the only two songs on this album sung in English. "Vroeger Bracht Je Bloemen" is a lovely Dutch cover version of "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" sung in duet with Steve Hofmyer. "Waarheen" is "Amazing Grace" sung in Dutch. And it sounds gorgeous. The only piece I didn't really take a shine to was the final number, "Gospelmedley". It is the other song in English and it feels oddly out of place here, being a medley of African-American Gospel music. Her fairly strong Dutch accent makes these American songs sound doubly strange. I felt that the album should have ended with the beautifully soaring "Waarheen". Overall I enjoyed the album and thought it was worth the price. The CD comes with a 12-page cover booklet including complete lyrics in Dutch and full-colour photographs of Dana."
