· Japan?s finest Underground Techno DJ and producer
La Bergotte | Los Angeles, CA USA | 05/05/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"DJ Shufflemaster (AKA Tatsuya Kanamori) throws the monkey wrench in the Japanese "popstar machine", staying deep in Tokyo's undercover while remaining worldwide the highly respected Underground Techno DJ producer true Techno fans and DJ's worldwide recognize and respect. Originally from the Subvoice label and liveact camp and somehow currently managing ten functions at once, his direction and message is that of a clear-minded and solid player: Underground and uncompromising.DJ Shufflemaster's debut album EXP kicks thirteen-tracks of fortified DJ food, built deep and mentally transcendant. Hard sequences bathed with purist Techno, narrative but tracky and addictive. EXP operates from many angles: the title-track EXP and INNERVISIONS, guaranteed club-rockers; OPAQUENESS and P.F.L.P., deeply reflective late-night stormers; and FOUTHHINTER and IMAGEFORUM, the blinding 12-minute odyssey on a banging but personal mission.Says DJ Shufflemaster himself of this work: I would like to show my thoughts and everything that I am through the album. If it doesn't reflect my ideas and the reasons that I live for, there is no meaning for me to create an album. Therefore, EXP doesn't contain just one theme or concept.DJ Shufflemaster on his new Tresor album:Artists do not create albums with one theme like humans do not live with one thought. But unwise critics would like to think that albums are done based on one theme. If those critics see ideas or themes that do not agree with theirs in an album, then they reject it immediately. However, my album is not for those unwise critics. What I would like to do is to show my thoughts and everything that I am through an album. If the album does not reflect my ideas and the reasons that I live for, then there will be no meaning for me to create an album. Therefore, the album EXP does not contain just one theme or concept. Events in life and the factors that surround the musical styles could be expressed by words such as expansion, experience, experiment, exploration, explosion, exposure and express. Thus, the album is titled EXP. DJ Shufflemaster (Tatsuya Kanamori), Japan's most Underground export is one of the main artists from Tokyo's Subvoice record label circle. DJ's and the press immediately picked up Shufflemaster's debut-single alike, landing him respect in NME and gracing Laurent Garnier's 1996 mix-CD.Uniquely, and completely without mainstream Japanese media building his notoriety, DJ Shufflemaster's constant releases of top-end quality Techno have brought the world to recognize his world-class production and DJ talent. His well-known remix talents include work for prominent Techno artists such as Adam Beyer & Joel Mull, Ben Sims, DJ Rush and with co-produced tracks alongside Sweden's Cari Lekebusch. In recent years, Shufflemaster is regularly jumping time zones being flown to DJ England, at Love Parade (Berlin), Belgium, France, Switzerland and Spain's Sonar Festival as well as appearing soon across more of Europe supporting the release of his debut "EXP" album, to be released on Tresor Records Berlin"
