CD Reviews

Too good for words
03/27/2004
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I have very ecclectic tastes. I think that needs to be said before i start. I like a lot of things that 90 percent of the world would label as crap, but i love this album. i bought it in my local record store by the reccomendation of the owner, and i got it real cheap. The packaging is great, it comes in its own box, ad then it has the normal double cd case, and the liner notes are cool. it gives a short history of Emperor Haile Sellasie I, King of Kings, Lord of Lords, Conquering Lion of Judah. and it also has a short history of Count Ossie's nyahbhingie gatherings in the wareika hills, which is what this is.
The music is "tribal". It focuses heavily on congas, bongas, and assorted percussion. If that's not your thing, then you definately won't like this. It's also got great instrumentation. I noticed great sax solos, and even trombone parts. im a trombonist and i love trombone music, from Jay Jay Johnson, to Don Drummond, to Fred Wesley, so the fact that there was trombone on here really made me like it a lot more. A few of the tracks have words, i can't really call them vocals, because most of the are spoken, but they are interesting. The best song on the album is defnately Grounation, the half an hour monster of a song on the second disk. This song is a half an hour of percussion basically. Personally, i think this is great music, and it works great for bckground music whie im doing homework or reading."
