CD Reviews

Resurrected Once Again

"Chances are unless you have been into death metal for a long time, Convulse completely slipped under your nose. To be honest, it's not surprising, because when World Without God was originally released in 1992, it was only released in vinyl, and has been long sought after for years.

That is, until now. When 2010 rolled along, Relapse decided to re-release this long sought-after classic from this Finnish group, and what a treat we get. Do you love the disgusting atmosphere of Autopsy's first two releases? Do you dig the rough guitar tone that made up the Scandinavian sound in bands like Entombed and Dismember? You will enjoy this. Everything sounds raw and gritty here, and with an atmosphere that completely crushes. This is Finnish death metal at its peak, rivaled only by Demigod's "Slumber of Sullen Eyes" and Demilich's "Nespithe".

If you love old school death metal with a touch of doom and plenty of amazing riffs, this is mandatory listening, and with this re-release, there is no excuse to let this slide by any more."
Another early death metal gem has resurfaced!

"I was super happy to read about a couple of months ago that this album was finally getting some justice with a proper CD reissue. World Without God was released initially on vinyl by the long defunct Thrash Records label in 1990, and through some of my tape trading sources, I managed to hear this album. It is definitely a worthy release even 20 years later. The guitar tone is heavy, and sounds even better against a backdrop of blast beats. The album reminds me of a lot of the early Finnish releases that were coming out around 1990, and easily stands alongside the other releases from that period, e.g. Sentenced, Funebre, Demigod, Amorphis/Abhorrence, etc. Relapse Records re-issued this album with their classic demo Resuscitation of Evilness and two live tracks as bonus. There is not a bad track on this album either. A very worthy package indeed.

Sadly, like most of the early Finnish bands that rose from the underground in the early 1990's, Convulse only released two albums. Their later release was more death rock than death metal; but of their two releases, this is the one to purchase. Dead heavy, dead evil, dead crushing.

"
Old Skool Death Metal at it's best.

"Here we have a re-issue of a classic melodic death metal release. I never heard this album from Convulse until I read about this re-release being done and checking it out. I also did some research about this release to learn more about it as wel as the band. Back in the day, the early 90's to be exact, I did buy Relections and really didn't care for it at all because it same off to much like psychedelic rock than death metal. Reflections was their second album and is almost like an entirly different band compared to this release.

World Without God is an awesome old school death masterpiece for fans of Asphyx, Nihilist, Dismember, Entombed, Unleashed and Pestilence. This is a must have death metal classic of the highest regard. I think it's great that RELAPSE records saw the need to remaster this and make it available again with some bonus material so that new fans of the genre can see and hear where it all began with some of these once obscure releases that you couldn't get anymore up until now. Worship or die!!!!!"
